Inviting readers to look west before looking east, this volume traces the Syriac liturgical and theological foundations, from the School of Antioch to the Synod of Babai, that shaped Jingjiao Christianity in Tang China. Integrating Syriac, Sogdian, and Chinese sources, and offering new readings of the Xi'an Stele, the Luoyang Pillar, Pelliot chinois 3847, and the contested Kojima A manuscript, the study traces the reception and adaptation of Nicene theology--from creation to Christology, from Trinity to salvation--within the Chinese context.
